Loya Garrett is a small town girl, born and raised in Kanab, UT, but with big city connections as well. She moved to California as a teenager, where her step-father worked for 20th Century Fox Studio. She remembers some fun Halloweens when she could go to the wardrobe department on the Fox lot and take her pick of the costumes. She graduated from Kanab High School and attended College of Southern Utah, now SUU, before marrying her husband, Gale. His career in transportation took them back to CA, where they lived and raised their daughter and two sons in the LA area, the San Diego area, the San Francisco area, then Aurora, CO, before coming back to Utah.
Ironically Gale went to work at SUU for fourteen years and Loya has been at Dixie for eighteen years so you can imagine their ‘ blended loyalties’ make for good dinner conversation. Loya worked in admissions with international students, veterans, and transfer students before coming to Student Support Services last year. She has loved learning about the TRIO programs and working with the dedicated people who serve at-risk students. A recent trip to the state capital for the signing of a Trio Day proclamation with Governor Leavitt was a highlight.
Living in St. George and spending vacations in Alaska and the cabin in Island Park, ID are ‘good things’, add children and grandchildren and their activities, and some adopted International students and her mother next door and you have a very full and interesting life.
