SSS Offers these Services...
 

ALL OF OUR SERVICES AND ADVISING ARE FREE FOR MEMBERS OF OUR PROGRAM!

What Is The Catch?
In return for all our services, we require that all SSS members meet with an SSS advisor at least twice per semester.  At this Semester Progress Meeting, we will note your progress, help to update your goals and discuss how we can assist you in meeting your goals.

You are also required to attend the various workshops and activities that SSS sponsors.  These activities are designed to enhance your academic and personal success by addressing issues such as study skills, financial aid information, test taking strategies and diversity.

When Should I Apply?
With limited space available in the program, it is important to come into the North Instructional Building, Room 157, as soon as possible to fill out an application.

It's our job to help you. 

Remember, "Support" is our middle name.


 

 

 

INDIVIDUALIZED ACADEMIC ADVISEMENT

Students may receive personalized advisement regarding their career/academic goals.  SSS advisors can assist you to select classes and register you on the spot in our offices.   We keep a detailed file an each participant to track your progress towards graduation and transferring pre-requisites.  The following are the General Education requirements for the following associate degrees offered at DSC:

CAREER TESTING/ADVISING

If you haven't selected a major yet, don't panic! 

SSS advisors can assist you in finding a path. The staff can assist you in a career interest inventory using www.utah.access.bridges.com  This website has you complete an interest inventory and then matches your interests with various related careers.  It will also help you to find which schools offer your area of study.

We can also provide you with a list of majors at the state's other college.

 

 

TUTORING

Upon request, SSS can provide quality tutoring in a variety of subjects including Math, Science and many other subjects on request. 

One-on-One Tutoring is available without cost to SSS participants. 
We can arrange for tutoring in almost any Dixie College Academic Subject.  Don't get behind with tutoring, just steps away in Room 133 of the North Instructional Building.  For tutoring information and times, contact Susan Garner or call 652-7660.

 

TRANSFER ADVISING AND CAMPUS TOURS

As you continue to pursue your bachelor's degree, SSS advisors can provide valuable information to make your transfer from Dixie State College to any other institutions of higher education go smoothly.  It is never to early too think about your transfer options.  We maintain a collection of college catalogues and applications for all institutions in Utah and the surrounding region.

But we do not stop there!   We aid you in your future academic plans by providing fall and spring semester tours to other colleges, which will make your transition easier and more productive. 

The Campus Tour

Our tours visit Utah State University, Weber State University, University of Utah, Utah Valley State College, BYU, UVSC, and UNLV.  We introduce you to ambassadors, show you the campus, and set up appointments with an advisor in your major.  Watch the newsletter to see when the next tour is scheduled or contact Jonathan Morrell or call 652-7656 to book a spot. 


 

STUDY SKILLS COACHING

Nothing is more important to your academic success than having strong study skills.  We can offer tips on note taking, effective textbook reading, marking textbooks, defeating test/math anxiety, test-taking strategies and many other topics.  The specific job of Dave Bethers is assist students improve their study skills and succeed in college.  You can make an appointment to meet one-on-one with Dave to assess your study habits and develop ways to improve them.   Check out these helpful web pages for tips on college success!

SCHOLARSHIPS/FINANCIAL AID

Participation Grant

The DSC SSS project has been awarded a grant totaling more than $30,000 from the U.S. Department of Education to provide financial assistance to SSS Pell Eligible participants. This Supplemental Grant Aid is awarded based on eligibility and need and is established to reduce loan dependency.  Eligibility requirements include:

  1. Active participant in the SSS program during the program year.
  2. Eligible to receive a Pell Grant for the program year as verified by the DSC Financial Aid office
  3. Offered and or awarded federally subsidized or un-subsidized student loans, OR have "unmet" financial need determined by the college Financial Aid Office. 
  4. Currently in good academic standing with the college.
  5. Freshmen or Sophomore status

Awards range from $200 to $1000. More than $20,000 was awarded for Fall 2002 and Spring 2003 semesters.  Additional fund are available for summer scholarships.  Contact the SSS staff for more information.

 

SSS Scholarship

SSS members who are not receiving Pell Grant money are invited to apply for ten $200 scholarships.  Keep in mind that that there are only ten scholarships a year.  Eligibility requirements include:

  1. Active participant in the SSS program during the program year.
  2. Not eligible to receive Pell Grant as verified by the DSC Financial Aid office.
  3. Currently in good academic standing with the college.
  4. Freshmen or Sophomore status

 

SSS also awards a $500 Utah State TRIO scholarship that can be used anywhere.

SSS NEWSLETTER

As a member, you will receive a monthly newsletter filled with vital information about program and college events to assist in your academic and social needs.  Read our newsletter to keep informed of upcoming events and activities, which correlate with the SSS program. Useful information about Dixie State College is included in each issue.  Click on the link above and read this months issue online.

 


 

SEMESTER MEETINGS

Once involved in college, we continue to support you by providing activity meetings on a regular basis.  These meetings keep you informed of events that correspond with our program. We offer semester progress meetings where you can talk one-on-one with an advisor to update your progress and plan new academic goals. Upon request we will arrange private and small group tutoring sessions (Susan Garner), as well as study skills instruction (Dave Bethers). We assist you with all these services, including graduation advising, until you earn your degree. 

 


 

SSS ACTIVITIES & WORKSHOPS

SSS offers a wide variety of workshops and activities that will aid participants during the college and life experience.  Workshops are held the second Tuesday of each month at 12:00 in the North Instructional Building.  On request, workshops will also be held at 5:00.  For the next workshop see the current newsletter online.  Remember to bring your appetite, we will always  have something for you to eat.
