1. First, obtain and study the UTAH COMMERCIAL VEHICLE DRIVER HANDBOOK.
(I have 6 copies at Campus Services, and I can show you the sections you will need to study.)
When you are ready to take the written test at the DMV, you must:
TBe a valid driver for at least 1 year and over 21
THave a clear driving record NATION-WIDE
THave a current D.O.T. Medical Certificate*
THave your current driver’s license
THave your Social Security card
THave $35.00 for the Written Test fee plus an additional $5.00 for the ‘Passenger Endorsement’ fee.
TYou will be given an eye test at the DMV
You will be applying for the “B” written test
The Written Test is administered M-F between the hours of 8:00-10:00AM and 1:00-3:00PM
* There are 3 doctors at the St. George Clinic at 700 South and the overpass who do D.O.T. Medical Certifying; Drs. Davis, Stratford, and Pendleton. (673-6131) This includes a required drug test. Your own family doctor may be set up to do this also, check with him/her.) Call right away to get an appointment as most are 3-4 weeks out. Be sure to ask them to give you the longest stretch of time they can on your certificate. (They can certify from 6 months to 2 years.....ask them to consider giving you the two years.)
The Medical Certificate is as important as your Driver’s License. You must have it with you AT ALL TIMES!! You don’t want to know the penalty for not having it or having it expired if you are ever pulled over.
2. After taking the Written Test, you must:
T Make an appointment for the Driving Test. You may use one of the DSC mini buses for your driving, BUT....make certain they are not scheduled out on a reservation when you arrange your appointment. You might want to look at Tuesday or Wednesday during the week when the buses are most likely to be in.
TPlan on one hour for the driving part of the test.
TThe cost for the Driving Test is $55.00.
The $95.00 may seem a bit much, but as a one time cost, it beats out paying for a driver each trip. Remember that on trips of 6 or more hours, two qualified drivers are required.
All of this needs to be done before we can reserve the buses out to you as a driver for your trips. We’ll help where we can.
If you have more questions, I’ll try to find out the answers.
