Music Department Objectives:

 1. To provide lower division courses for prospective music majors working toward the baccalaureate information for Music Majors and Minors at Dixie College education, music theory or applied music.

 2. To provide courses that partially fulfill the general education requirements in the Fine Arts.

 3. To provide courses for those students who plan to utilize their music training for community service or social enjoyment.

 4. To assist in serving the general culture needs of the college and the community.

Degree Offered: Associate of Science or Associate of Arts

Music Major Requirements: Students wishing to graduate with and emphasis in Music should fill their general education requirements and elective credits to include the following courses:

Music Theory (16 Credits):

First Year

    Fall semester:
    Concurrent enrollment of MUS 1530 (Music Theory I) and MUS 1510 (Ear Training and Sight Singing I)

    Spring semester:
    Concurrent enrollment of MUS 1540 (Music Theory II) and MUS 1520 (E&S II)

Second Year

    Fall semester:
    Concurrent enrollment of MUS 2530 (Music Theory III) and MUS 2510 (E&S III)

    Spring semester:
    Concurrent enrollment of MUS 2540 (Music Theory IV) and MUS 2520 (E&S IV)

Music History (6 credits):

MUS 2010 and 2020 (Music in History partially fulfills Fine Arts general education requirement)

Private Applied Music (4 credits): lessons on your instrument or voice for 4 semester (MUS 1810/2810)

Performance (4 credits): MUS 1250 (College Chorus), MUS 1310(Symphonic Band), MUS 1350 (Chamber Orchestra)

Piano Instruction (2 credits): MUS 1710 and 1720 (Group Piano) or MUS 1810/2810 in Piano or Piano Proficiency Test

The following are strongly recommended for the music majors: MUS 1110, Fundamental of Conducting Other performing ensembles as appropriate: Chamber Singers (MUS 1270), Men's Chorus (MUS 1240), Jazz Ensemble (MUS 1330), Woodwind Chamber Ensemble (MUS 1340)

Music Minor Requirements: Students wishing to graduate with a minor in music should fill their general education requirements and elective credits to include the following courses:

Music Theory (8 credits): Concurrent enrollment of MUS 1510 and MUS 1530 (Fall) and MUS 1520 and MUS 1540 (Spring)

Music History (6 credits): MUS 2010 AND 2020 (partially fulfills Fine Arts general education requirement)

Private Applied Music (2 credits): lesson on your instrument or voice

Performance (4 credits): MUS 1250, MUS 1310, or MUS 1350

Piano Instruction (2 credits): MUS 1710 and MUS 1720 or MUS 1810/2810 in Piano
