Academic Advising
ADVISOR CHECKLIST - A short list of subjects to cover in an initial advisement session.
1.  Connect with the student, make eye contact, smile.
- Begin by asking about the student:
- Where is s/he from?
- How is school going?
- How is s/he doing personally?
- Why did s/he decide to attend Dixie?
- What are her/his plans, major/career goals?
2.  Determine the reason why the student came to see you.
- Always refer when appropriate, but don't give students the run around.
3.  Admission Procedures:
- Complete an admissions application
- Have high school/college transcripts sent or GED results
- Have test scores registered, ACT, SAT, CPT or Compass
- Pay $25 non refundable admissions fee
4.  Registration Preparation:
- Determine academic goals, which degree(s) or certificate(s) is planned
- Check matriculation status (SIS110)
- Check which classes are already taken or credited (SIS136)
- Check transferred credit, CLEP, AP, FLAT etc. (SIS141)
- Note high school GPA (SIS209)
- Check placement scores, if Engl, Math, & Read not already taken (SIS136)
- Determine if developmental classes are needed
- Ask if working or about other time constraints
- Ask how many credits/hours the student is planning on taking
5.  Registration Procedures (using requirements and weekly schedule worksheets):
- Encourage developmental classes first and English and Math classes early
- Place in Freshman Orientation class first semester (Capstone last semester)
- Check availability of classes and times (SIS105)
- Register classes (SIS1C4)
- Note: Science classes must always have labs registered at the same time
- Print out final listing registered courses with locations and times (SIS109)
- Can print our student's class schedule (SIS120)
6.  Encourage short and long term planning
7.  Other SIS information:
- Check billing and charges (SIS408/409)
- Student addresses and phone numbers (SIS003)
- Faculty can check current class list (SIS107)
- Check information on a class such as location, teacher, class limit (SIS129/130)
- Course number: four letters or spaces, four numbers, two digit section number.
- Ex. ssc_100001 = SSC 1000, section 1
- Term: last two digits of the year and the semester
- (fall = 4, spring = 2, summer = 3) Eg. 012 = 2001, spring semester
